Hipmarrakech : English - speaking Riads in Morocco

Al Fassia
Tel: 024 43 40 60, Gueliz

Owned and run only by women probably one of the best traditional meals you can get in Moroccan cuisine here in Marrakech.  The shoulder of lamb for 2 persons is to die for.  They serve from an A La Carte menu which is also a bonus.

Café Arabe
Tel : 00 212 24 42 97 28
148 Rue El Mouassine

Le Tobsil
Tel: 024 44 15 23

Rmila Bab Ksour. Difficult to find, at end of the derb. Next to Riad Catalina, which is well sign posted. Romantically & intimate set this restaurant in the heart of the medina with only 12 tables, set menu but offers a selection of traditional dishes.  Great Food, Great Atmosphere.

Dar Moha
Tel: 00 212 24 38 64 00
1 Rue Dar El bacha

Set in a restored Riad opposite the El Glaoui Palace in Marrakech, and which used to house the secretary of the Pacha, Dar Moha is owned by run Mohamed the chef who has spent the past 14 years in Switzerland so the cuisine is traditional with his unique twist.  Best seats around the pool in summer, very romantic with petal scattered in the courtyard alight with candles.

Le Fondouk
Tel: 024 37 81 90
Souk EL Fassi Kaat Bennahit

In the north medina, set in the old Fondouks a traditional hotel where the animals and goods were stored downstairs and rooms upstairs for sleeping, commonly used now for the artists work shops.  The Fondouk is a funky place to dine with a mixed menu of French and Moroccan cuisine served on 3 levels, my favourite is the roof terrace in warmer months with views back over the medina.

Yacout
Tel: 00 212 24 38 29 00
79 Sidi Ahmed soussi

Set in a grand old traditional house restored to its former glory, this was one of the first traditional Moroccan restaurants.  Starting with drinks & canapés on the roof terrace then followed by a 7 course degustation menu.

Jema el Fna (main square)
A fantastic array of food stalls starting with basic brochettes and soup to all the offal you can eat.  Great atmosphere and well worth night out.  Also surrounding the square several restaurants which are the Marrakechie, Cherguonie, Argana all good for basic Moroccan cuisine and some fabulous cafes to sit and have tea on the terrace as you watch the world go by.

The Kosy Bar
02438 0324
47 Place Der Ferblantiers

Near the Place des Ferblontier and the mellah,  an intimate restaurant and bar serving an A La Carte menu, even just for a quiet drink in the evenings well worth the visit.

La Grand Poste Cafe
Tel: 024 43 30 38
Gueliz opposite MacDonalds

A very new, clean style restaurant serving French A La Carte Bistro meals, set in the old post office in Gueliz.  The food is excellent, and it is reasonably priced.

Catanzaro
Tel: 024 43 37 31
Rue Tarek IBn ziad

A fantastic Italian restaurant in Marrakech, very simple red & white checked table clothes with home cooked meals, great pasta, pizza, and not to mention the antipasta salads to start.

Lolo Quoi
00212 (0)7256 9864
82 Avenue Hassan II

Opening in 2005 this modern Italian restaurant set in an old workshop in Gueliz has a great atmosphere.  A modern interpretation of Italian cuisine serving a basic menu of 4 or 5 pasta dishes, pizzas and starters.

Bo et zin
00212 2438 8012
Route D'Ourika

On the Ourika Valley road 3 kms out of town, set around the gardens serving French and Thai cuisine. It has a fantastic ambience when you can eat outside in the warmer months.

Le Comptoir
Tel: 00 212 24 43 77 10
Avenue Echouhada , Hivernage

For a great night of fun and entertainment it has to be the Comptoir.  Upstairs starting with drinks in the bar and even tapas, downstairs the restaurant serving Moroccan and European cuisine with a floor show of Musicians, Belly Dancers throughout the evening (at least on Fridays and Saturdays).  The outside courtyard in the rear also offers the use of the Chicha pipes (hubbly bubbly) to smoke.

Le Pavillon
Tel: 00 212 24 38 70 40

A romantic and probably the most unforgettable evening, tables set around a courtyard under the orange trees and inside on split levels. Excellent French cuisine.

Nawarma
Tel: 024 44 0844
30 Rue Koutoubia near the Jardin de La Koutoubia Hotel

This is our favourite Thai restaurant a few minutes walk from Jemaa El Fna. Narwarma means "fire and water" and is represented by a central fountain through which flames emerge in the middle of the restaurant. They have Thai cuisine as well as a selection of Moroccan and international cuisine.  The owner, Ali speaks perfect English, and is a great host.  It is set down an alley next to the Hotel Jardin De La Koutoubia, and you are guided to the restaurant by Moroccan rugs which litter the small alleyway (derb).

La Trattoria
024 43 2641
179 Rue Mohammed El Bekal

We ate there last night.  The courtyard is amazing with wonderful foliage, bougainvillers and a tall palm tree.  One of the best Italian restaurants in Marrakech.  There is a nice bar area before you enter the restaurant.
